Picture This
Consider this photo.
If you had to caption it in one word, what would that word be? "Kitchen," perhaps. How about if you had to choose an abstract idea? What story could be revealed by the confluence of this image of a physical space and an abstract idea or emotion?
For the first half hour or so of our class, take a walk around the building and consider spaces that seem to suggest stories. Take some photos or sketches. Note: do not include any people in your pictures, only spaces and objects. You can get as close or wide-angle as you see fit and do whatever fancy stuff you want, but simplest is often best.
When you return, we're going to share these photos on this page and do some writing.

ReplyDeletePost your pics here. (You might need to post them as links.) Now let's do some writing. Here are some possible prompts; feel free to use any of the photos posted (not just your own):
ReplyDeleteONE: Caption the photo, same as you did above, and create a story around the image and caption.
TWO: Pick two photos, one to accompany the beginning of a story or poem and one to accompany the middle or ending of it.
THREE: Consider what just happened moments ago in the photo -- or what's about to happen a split second afterward.
FOUR: Come up with your own prompts!

ReplyDeleteAt the end of the long shelves of books, there was a doorway. Nobody knew it was a doorway; it just looked like a bit of dark paneling on the wall. Nevertheless it did, in fact, lead elsewhere, out of the library, out of the building itself, and into the world -- or rather, another world, not this one.

ReplyDeleteHello. My name is “the couch in the second floor girls bathroom,” or “couch” for short. Or at least that’s what I think. That’s what I hear from the students anyhow. You might be wondering why I’m talking to you, or what I even have to say. But let me tell you, I actually have a lot to share. You might learn something. I’ve seen photoshoots, naps, laughs, and jokes. I’ve seen crying, fighting, snacking, and changing. You know the saying “A shoulder to lean on?” That’s me. People come to me for everything. Some people even use me when they are waiting in line for the bathroom. But that’s the least common thing I see.

ReplyDeleteBecause this is funny I have to note that just earlier I was writing about one of those exact spots in the north attic... thanks for the picture!
DeleteIn the shadows where she waited for him, a fallen yellow sign warned "CAUTION" and "LOOSE." There was a word below "loose" but she couldn't read it. Below that, the hapless stick figure of such signs slid, arms flailing. It looked like it was dancing rather than falling. Maybe it was doing both.

ReplyDeleteI don't have a phone to take pictures so I had to draw them and it didn't exactly go perfectly
It's only about a thousand times better than I could ever have done!

DeleteWhat's my story? Well i'm not sure I have much of a story, I sit still all day everyday at the desk. I see a lot of people come and go, they come to cry, laugh, chat, just grab a sweet treat from me. And other times they may not be there willingly for their quarterly check ins, if it wasn't for those I don't think I'd ever see half of them. I hear important discussions and silly ones. Of course I have my opinions, but then again I'm a bowl so there's not much I can do.
